Woven and Interconnected Narratives: Artists’ Books Unshelved

Artist Aimee Lee draws on decades of research and practice in hand papermaking to create works across media that engage and elevate craft, utility, and domestic work. To complement her solo exhibition at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, in this episode we look at “Vocabulary Lessons” and “Pelagic Inheritance.” We examine the ways these two artists’ books skillfully unite processes and material to explore complex ideas and emotions around language facility and generational trauma.

Lee’s solo exhibition, “Tethered,” is on view in the Sherry Grover Gallery from March 6 – June 14, 2026. It highlights several works from the Cynthia Sears Artists’ Books Collection, in addition to lent artist’s books and sculptural objects. Lee’s connections between identity and culture, the hand and the earth, plants and paper, history and sustainability, are the tethers her work explores.
